Notes on Zakat al-Fitr and Kafara

Paying Zakat al-Fitr at the end of the blessed month of Ramadan is one of the religious obligations and a condition for the acceptance of fasting and acts of worship performed during this month. We therefore inform the Muslims residing in Romania of the amount and method of payment of this zakat, along with the amounts related to Kafara:

Any person who is not themselves in need and whose living expenses are not covered by another party is obligated to pay Zakat al-Fitr for themselves and for those in their care, even if they did not fast. The time for paying Zakat al-Fitr begins from the night of Eid al-Fitr until before the Eid prayer, and this amount must be given to believing Muslims in need or set aside for that purpose during this time.

The amount of Zakat al-Fitr for this year (1447 AH – 2026 CE) in Romania, based on the price of wheat, is a minimum of 15 lei per person, and for those whose staple food is rice, a minimum of 45 lei per person.

The Kafara for one day of missed fasting due to a legitimate religious excuse whose makeup (qada) was not fulfilled by the following year is a minimum of 5 lei, and the Kafara for intentionally breaking the fast is a minimum of 200 lei per day.

There is no specific time limit for paying Kafara, however it is preferable to do so as soon as possible. The amount paid must be used exclusively for feeding the poor.

The amounts mentioned above are approximate. The greater the amount paid for Zakat al-Fitr and Kafara, the greater the spiritual merit and reward.

Zakat al-Fitr and Kafara may be paid directly to believing Muslims in need in your place of residence, or handed over to the Imam Ali Foundation or trusted individuals to be distributed to the poor on your behalf.
