Lesson 7: Ridiculing others

All the students were seated in the class. Today, the teacher was revising the chapter by questioning the students. The teacher asked Zaid a question. Zaid could not answer. When he did manage to give a reply, it was completely wrong. When some students heard the reply, they were amused and began laughing, ridiculing Zaid at the same time. Zaid was very embarrassed as it is when he blundered with the wrong reply, then the ridiculing of his classmates embarrassed him further. He was dejected and placed his head on the table.

The teacher comforted Zaid. He cheered and soothed him. Then he turned towards the students and remarked, ‘If in such a situation, someone else had ridiculed you, how would you have felt. Definitely you would have felt offended, and would have considered it a case of bad akhlaq. Never ridicule others, Allah does not like such people.’

The teacher’s advise had a positive impact on the students. They apologised to Zaid and he forgave them.

Then the teacher told them further, ‘Always keep the 11th verse of Surah (49) Hujarat in mind.’

‘O you who believe! Let not (one) people laugh at (another) people perchance they may be better than they, nor let women (laugh) at (other) women, perchance they may be better than they; and do not find fault with your own people nor call one another by nicknames; evil is a bad name after faith, and whoever does not turn, these it is that are the unjust.

To ridicule others and to call them with demeaning nicknames is against Islamic culture.
