Lesson 6: Fulfilling promises is necessary

It was a very hot day. Our beloved Prophet, Muhammad Mustafa (s.a.w.a.) was seated on a stone under the sunshine. The sun was blazing, and our Prophet (s.a.w.a.) was perspiring profusely. He (s.a.w.a.) used to get up and sit down at times. But strangely, he (s.a.w.a.) never took shelter from the oppressive heat. He (s.a.w.a.) kept gazing fixedly in a particular direction, as if he was anticipating someone’s arrival.

Some companions witnessed this spectacle from a distance. They hurried towards the Prophet (s.a.w.a.). After salutations, they inquired from him (s.a.w.a.), ‘Why are you seated here in this terrible heat?’

The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) replied, ‘This morning I promised a man that I would meet him here. He has not turned up as yet and I am waiting for him.’

The companions suggested, ‘Why don’t you get away from this heat and wait for the man under the shade.’

The Prophet (s.a.w.a.) said, ‘I promised to meet him here at this very place. I will not violate my promise. I will not move from here until he arrives.’

Our beloved Prophet (s.a.w.a.) used to say, ‘A Muslim always fulfills his promise, and never violates it.’ He (s.a.w.a.) also declared, ‘Those who always speak the truth, maintain the trust, have good akhlaq and fulfill the promise shall be very close to me

in Qiyamat.’

A Muslim always fulfills his promise. A Muslim never violates his promise.
